Despite becoming the two-time consecutive Super Bowl champion, the Kansas City Chiefs possessed the weakest receiving corps in the entire league. Many even believe, that if it wasn’t for Andy Reid’s coaching, Patrick Mahomes’ leadership, and Travis Kelce compensating for the wide receivers, the Chiefs wouldn’t even have advanced to the playoffs.
As the Super Bowl ended, the first thing that the team did was strengthen the offense by adding potent receivers as they were aiming for a historic three-peat. Amid the roster changes, the position of wideout Kadarius Toney became a topic of discussion, especially his inadequate performance last season with dropping some crucial passes.
Instead of releasing him, head coach Reid decided to give him another chance but with a few changes. He tested Toney’s capabilities as a running back after seeing his production in 2023. While talking to reporters on Thursday’s preseason finale, Reid addressed Toney’s future in Kansas City acknowledging what he can bring to the team.
We went through last year with him, so we kind of know who he is,” said Reid. “He's a talented kid and he's in a battle to make the team, but we never question the talent there at all, so it's just him staying healthy was the main thing.Andy Reid said
Even though Toney finished last season with 169 yards and a touchdown on 27 receptions, he had a major contribution to the Chiefs’ victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. But to make his place in the 53-player roster, Toney would certainly need to elevate his game.
Kadarius Toney aside, Creed Humphrey’s extension highlights offseason strategy
While Toney’s future in Kansas City remains uncertain, the Kansas City Chiefs have been finalizing key players since the offseason. Creed Humphrey is the latest on the list after signing a four-year deal with the Chiefs. After being drafted in 2021, Humphrey earned two Pro Bowl honors and earned a name for himself.
He's a heck of a football player, a real good football player. He started off that way and he kept it going that way. So we appreciate all he does and we appreciate having him here.Andy Reid said
With him in the guaranteed for four more years, Reid now has a powerful defensive target on the football field. He has now become the highest-paid NFL center after signing a $72 million contract, including guaranteed money of $50 million.
