City of Boise to launch new composting program early next year

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) The city of Boise is moving forward with a new compost removal program. As it stands, most homes have a grey trash can for your typical trash, a blue can for recyclables, and beginning next March, residents could have another colored trash can that's dedicated solely for compost.

The city of Boise is moving forward with a new compost removal program.

As it stands, most homes have a grey trash can for your typical trash, a blue can for recyclables, and beginning next March, residents could have another colored trash can that's dedicated solely for compost.

But you might start noticing some changes this fall. Boise resident's trash bill will increase $3.40 -- money that will go toward the city's new year-round compost pickup program.

To jump start the new effort, the city will need about $9.5 million for new trucks and facilities.

Some local residents, who already compost at home, say they don't want to be charged for a process they're already actively involved with.

"We (the city) don't have the specific solution to that just yet, there was some discussion about maybe a waiver for folks that are already composting but we are going to work through all of those details hopefully in the next couple of months," said Steve Burgos, environmental manager.

The compost program will accept items such as food and lawn clippings and will be located about 20 miles south of the city's water treatment plant.

The city says it believes the new program will be a success since 97 percent of Boise households participate in recycling.
