After getting her start on Nickelodeon starring in shows like The Thundermans, Kira Kosarin is really starting to establish her presence as both an actress and a singer.
Having newly signed with Republic Records, Kosarin is ready to take the music industry by storm, beginning with her brand new EP titled Something New. The 24-year-old singer/songwriter dropped her INCREDIBLE five track project earlier this summer, and we have had it on repeat ever since.
“So I have been technically working on it for two years,” she shared with Celeb Secrets in an exclusive interview at VidCon 2022. “I put out a project top of 2020 independently and then signed with Republic, which was really exciting and a secret for two years, and over those two years, I’ve wrote and wrote and wrote and wrote, and I went through like a few different variations of this EP.”
Consisting of five AMAZING tracks titled “something new,” “mood ring,” “parachute (plan b),” “busy” and “goodbye & thank u,” every song on Something New is truly a must-listen.
The EP itself is said to capture Kosarin’s emotions and memories from the ages of 22 to 25, making it overall a very authentic project. Touching on themes of friendship, love, and vulnerability, Something New tells genuine stories and is truly as real as it gets.
To sum it all up, Kosarin describes Something New as “a little collection of the good things from the bad year,” and the duality between this project and her previous one is very intriguing.
While Something New is the follow-up to 2020’s Songbird, it is the start of a brand new era for Kira Kosarin.
“The first project that I made in the pandemic, unsurprisingly, was really heartbreaking, and you know, it carried a lot of pain with it,” she revealed to us.
Kosarin shared that after releasing Songbird, “I got to this point where I got really lucky. Some really good things came to me, some really good people came to me, and I had this little pocket of joy in the pandemic and I just desperately wanted to like hold onto it, and I think the way that I did that was by putting it into this EP.”
Even with the support of Republic Records behind her, something extremely unique about Something New is the fact that Kira Kosarin REALLY took control.
“I am involved in every single thing, which is great because I’m a control freak, but also not great because there’s so much to do all the time. It’s one of the reasons I’m really grateful to have the support of the label behind me now, because as an independent artist, it was like literally everything. Now it’s like everything with a couple extra hands on deck — which is good — but I’ve been having a lot of fun designing the merch [and] all the cover arts,” she shared with us.
Kosarin added, “I made a mood board with all of the ideas for the cover art, lyric videos and music videos back in like November, and then from January to now, we’ve been executing them, and then I literally just finished the EP cover art last night, because we were submitting it tomorrow morning while I’m here at VidCon.” What a busy life Kira Kosarin has!
The ability to take control and do things the way she wants to ultimately helps contribute to the real, authentic nature of Something New, and we are OBSESSED.
Also while chatting with her at VidCon, Kira hinted at live performances in the near future.
When talking about Something New, Kosarin said, “I really wanted to make sure that this first project I put out was not just something that felt representative of me, but something that I wanted to perform,” implying live shows are on the way.
“I’ve got a couple little like festival gigs happening in September,” she confirmed. “I’ll post about it all. It’ll all be on my social media and everything… I’m hoping to do a proper tour though to tour this EP, so working on that right now.”
We REALLY hope to catch Kira Kosarin on the road, but until then, we will be streaming Something New on repeat. Listen below and let us know which song is your favorite by either leaving a reaction at the bottom of the post or by sending us a tweet at @celebsecrets.
